Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I found this piece at a site where I have found Civil War era relics.
I was wondering if anyone can date this item from the way the back attachment points were made.
I,m 99% sure that it's plated with gold & it tested as gold , there are no markings on this piece anywhere.
I,m mainly wondering if it is CW period so I know rather to put it in a case with other relics from this site.

Ill be grateful for any help.
much thanks

( Hopefully the pictures will show the detail needed)..

Maybe a book or a bible clasp that may have held a stone or a covered picture.

Part of the clasp is a tube hinge which was popular in the early-mid 1800's, but opposite that I wouldn't expect to see an eyelet (with what I presume to be a broken pin). I would expect to see a c-clip or a tube clip, so unless I'm wrong, which is always possible, the eyelet isn't original.
If I had to guess:
Its possible that this was a mourning brooch which held a locket of a lost loved ones hair.
Date could be from 1840's-50's. Again, this is only a guess, and I'm only very partially educated such things.

Thanks for the reply's
I was thinking it was some type of brooch as well that likely Contained a Picture.
When I dug it ; I looked REAL hard for a Stone Or something of the size that would fit inside the piece.
Thanks Again
