All Treasure Hunting
My son has taken interest in exploring the creek on our family farm to collect anything he finds ingesting (whether artifact, fossil, rock, stick, or worm). I'm happy he's so intrigued, but he wants to know what everything is. I'm learning with him as we go, so I appologize in advance if I seem clueless :)

We found several broken arrowheads & lots of rocks yesterday. These are 3 different pieces we'd like to know more about:

1) he picked this up because he thought it looked like a spear. Could it be an artifact? The end was broken off & shiney mineral is present - any direction on this?

2) the shape of this caught my eye at first, but then I thought it was just a rock. But I kind of thought the edge looked worked? And the indention on the back?

3) is this a piece of flint rock? It has so many layers.

Thanks in advance for any help we get :)

No...not yet but keep looking. They are out there.

The 1st one looks like a natural creek fracture on it. The jagged texture is a true sign of it being natural. If it was done by ancient man or woman it would have a smooth look and feel and also a bulb of percussion at the striking platform where it was hit for removal.
The 2nd one has the look of a ax which would of made me pick it up but after looking at it dry I would of noticed all the cortex hadnt been altered and tossed it back. Looks to be flint and just a nice shape. If it had been altered or shaped the skin wouldnt still be on.
The rest same as the 2nd they havent been altered. Looks at some of the other post in the forum for the worked verses the pieces you have found.
I believe this one was a ax or Celt in the making that I found. No cortex on it except the one end that hasnt been finished (still cortex on the end) as you can see almost all of the cortex (skin) of the rock has been removed. Hope this helps you understand the process. Still a nice day spent outside is better than sitting in front of the TV.

Hmm. Interesting piece rock.

It isn't a celt in the making, not the right type material for a one.

It looks to me like a large, crude, but utilized piece judging from that bit.

The shiny stuff on #1 is flattened broken brachiopod fossils. They are shiny because the shell material was replaced with silica and a nice brown color from dissolved iron rust.

#2 and #3 are clusters of fossils from reef deposits. if you look close, you can see hundreds of small fossils.

Yea another mystery piece for my collection. It doesnt show well but has notches in the middle on both sides like a ax
