I will be in Winchester the 1st or2nd weekend of May and was wondering if there are any places to MD while I am there? I know there was alot of CW action there but I also know how the cities and people are feeling about detcting these days. I will not have alot of time to go but maybe I can get a few hours in. If anyone knows some good spots the info will be greatly appreciated. :icon_pirat:

I was just there. Good luck in Winchester. I get the feeling that if you mention Metal Detecting within 1 mile of a CW site anymore you might as well have horns and a pointy tail. I feel like a criminal just LOOKING at a battlefield and dreaming of what might still lay out there. Looks like the old-timers mopped up the place in the 70's anyways. I ead how people took home buckets of bullets. You'd think they would have left some for the future to pull up? Sure. Now MD'ers go out and spend 10 hours hunting and come back with a single clad penny. hehe

Yea its tuff in Winchester, I went a couple weeks ago with a friend who had a nice farm. After 5 hours all we had found was some modern bullets a harmonica reed a toy gun and the usual mix of hodge podge stuff. Oh yea, I did find a pretty nice flat button at least it was nice until I stabbed it with my digging tool >:(

Plenty of places to hunt you just have to ask. Go up introduce yourself and ask permission. The WORST thing they can say is NO then you just say OK thanks and leave. You will find someone who won't mind. There are plenty of areas that are still loaded with relics up there. I can't give you specific sites as I'm still working on some for future diggin but they are out there!

I am from Winchester but live in the city now but there are still a lot of places that still have relics. I am gearing up for some MD once the weather breaks.

hmmmmmm i have a good friend that lives in Winchester he lives in a house that was built back in the 1800's i bet he would let us MD there :D

Im heading to Winchester on Thursday to do some digging all day friday. I have a sweet spot and will post my finds. Also i will be using my new Tesoro Tejon, i hope it is good to me.

It's still here.

I live in Winchester, and I've pulled 5 plates in 3 years (all US). It's here, but it's spread out. Yes, there are some avid "old Timers" that beat the hell out of the obvious spots, but I've found that the outskirts and the least likely places still produce. I look for steep inclines that go down to substantial creeks....the old timers sometimes say "screw that" and move to more solid ground. I pulled a couple full Hotchkiss shells on massive inclines last year. Also, the old timers used to plate hunt (high disc.), in most cases, and the older Metrotechs and early Nautilus machines may have missed those small cuffs. I pulled 2 droop wing cuffs in a yard in Winchester that many said was beat. Also, go where it's trashy....with patience and a good knowledge of your machine, you can get past that masking layer and find the Civil War era layer. It takes a little more time and patience around here, but it's still giving up a few goodies. You're welcome to shoot me an email anytime you guys are around here, and we'll see what the old farts left behind.

I haven't hunted much in Winchester, but the area still has alot to be found. Frederick County was very active during the war. My little town changed hands six times in one day. I'm still doing some investigating, but could come into some very productive land. Alot of it. I'll gladly take some folks if I get permission. There were many camps here and alot of traveling thru the area. I think the best has yet to be found.
