Any public spots near Jedediah Smith State Park in Cali?

I'm gonna be heading down to the redwoods to spend a night camping with the family this weekend. A old local buddy of mine told me about a good out of the way spot to pan at, however when I check on my land matters it shows me it is still within the national park boundaries. So I'm guessing I'm not really allowed to pan there.... Is there anywhere else close by I should head? Otherwise I'll probably just head somewhere random on state owned land or national forest...

Check the laws for prospecting on state land. Here in AZ it is not allowed and even rockhounding and flower picking is illegal if I remember correctly.

Hi Jim, I live not far from where you'll be camping.

Ya, don't do any prospecting on State or National Park lands. They'll ticket you for collecting a rock or picking a flower. Really! Even your dog off leash, to swim in the river. will be a citation.

From Jedediah State Park head northeast on Highway 199 about a couple miles. Hang a right on South Fork Road. Just after crossing the second bridge hang a left. Follow this road I'm guessing about 3 mile to Craigs Beach. Concrete outhouse in a pull-out on the left. Trail to river is at the upstream corner of the parking area. Follow trail to river, bear to the left and prospect where the upland bank meet the gravel bar. Compacted soil, sand and gravel. I've found good gold here.

There is also a great swimming hole there for the family. It's quite deep, with a very large eddy that will carry you in a big circle around the pool.

I was just there over the 4th with my visiting sons and other family members. Be aware as well, there is a rifle/pistol range uphill and not to far away. You are safe, but may hear some gunfire. Have fun, find some gold and take a few pictures.
