Found this object. It's obviously broken off something, but it has some markings. Any thoughts?

Villagenut already gave you the correct ID for your find (a very-antique padlock's brass keyhole-cover - also called a dust-cover). It is most often seen on a type of lock called a "Smokehouse" padlock.

Since it seems you do not know the meaning of the markings on it, here's the info.
The marking at top is the British Royal crown.
The letters below the crown are W.R which stands for William Rex, meaning King William IV, who reigned from 1830-37... which tells us when the padlock your keyhole-cover came from was made (and the country it was made in).
The marking at bottom, "Patent", signifies that the specific version of padlock had a British Patent.

Wow! Thank you for the information.

Ceramic, way too thick to be a dust cover. Has anyone looked up the letters?
