Any tips on what to associate gold with other than Quartz.

I have been searching creek areas and anybody have clues what minerals to look for besides quartz. I've moved some boulders to find buck shot underneath. Well I got good excercise. I found some Iorn rings but no gold. I check crevices with my Whites GMT Goldmaster but no dice. Any tips out there from members.

Look for the book 'Fist Fulls of Gold' by Chris Ralph. Lots of great information. Quartz is not always associated with gold.

As mentioned above, Ralph's book is EXCELLENT! It has the most concise chapters I have seen on gold geology, under one cover, that you will find. It is well written in layman's terms. I also like the Smithsonian's field book on ROCKS AND MINERALS. Learn to recognize the pyrites... arsenopyrite (arsenic-iron sulfide) Chalcopyrite (iron-copper sulfide) Iron pyrite (iron sulfide) Galena (lead sulfide). Also Shoryl (black tourmaline). Actually, these and other minerals are more closely associated with gold than quartz. There is a long list. You've got some studying to do! TTC

Quartz is good. Ironstone is good. Quartz and ironstone is better. And I have found a lot of gold where neither occurred. Gold is where you find it.

Thank you Steve for your great input. No wonder I find alot of quartz & Iron rocks in the gold tailings. Sometimes I find a beautiful green rock when wet looks like a jade, I just collect those for fun too. Have a nice Easter tomorrow, Goldentruth.
