Dgaughan found this great bell along with a few other nice finds at an 1800's house here in town. The bell appears to be cast iron and is in really good shape, still rings. Can anyone here put an age to it or give me any info. Finally able to post some pics, not real great but its somethig, Thanks.

Down here in the swamps we put them around alligator necks.

The purpose being that the bells would ring out in the forest signaling the coming of a carriage or horse so that the wild beasts or people would not be taken by surprise is one use for them.

hey guys,
up here in the north they're called sleighbells. they were attached to the horses underneath there belly on long leather straps. also come in different sizes, i have one that is about 2 and a half inches wide and very heavy.
yours is a size 6 or 9 bell.
