My nephew, Dylan Taylor, is competing in the American Trail Race 2017. The American Trail Race is a Tour Divide style self supported race primarily on dirt and gravel roads. This is the first year for this race which mostly follows a cross country dirt route created in the mid 2000s for dual sport motorcycle touring. It is a 5050 mile bikepacking race that started on June 1st in North Carolina and it ends in Oregon with ~350K ft of elevation gain. (for comparison the Tour Divide is 2700 miles with 180K of gain so this is a bit bigger)

He has set a finish goal for himself as "before July 1"

His Mileage goal is: ~180mi/day which may not be at all realistic....

For those interested in watching the progress of this race and/or would like to cheer my nephew on here is the link to do so.

I forgot to mention that if you click on his name, at the bottom of the page there is a section called [h=3]Cheer/Discuss this Rider on Facebook[/h] should anyone wish to leave words of support.

Good luck to your nephew! Cool post!

Route includes nearly 11,000 foot elevation in Colorado.

Hope it isn't raining when they get to that point.
Don.....

With 604 miles behind them, it looks looks they are riding together until bivouac this evening.

180 miles offroad is very optimistic, I have done 1oo mile rides in a day 6 times in life (self supported touring) Carrying 40 pounds of gear and stealth camping by the wayside. Send him my kudos!

Thanks Getter! 100 feet would kill me! Dylan is actually doing a bit better than he anticipated, averaging 199.6 miles per day .. at least up to this point. As the race goes one, I would expect to see that drop. His total weight (bike and gear) is right at 42 pounds.

Here is one of the reasons Dylan loves these races!

He must really have a fire inside, like you, I would expect to see that # drop as time goes on, that is a brutal pace to keep up. Next, ask him to enter the RAAM race across America, a coast to coast ride over 3,000 miles. Amazingly, the record is 8 days and some change.

That pic is towards the east; tell him to do a 180 and take the advise of Horace Greeley.
Don.....

Hey Don .. Dylan was appreciative of your support. Thanks!

What a fun post. Quite an age spread on the participants. Now I am going to be officially addicted to the Live Tracker! GO DYLAN!

Dylan now has 2034.4 miles behind him ... roughly 3000 more to go!

As of a few minutes ago Dylan has 3124.5 miles behind him, and is still holding on to first place, although his closest competitor is always just a short distance behind.
