Taiwan has a rich history... and was under Dutch colonial rule for a period of time... to trade with the Ming Empire and Japan...
The trade through Taiwan was extensive involving the Dutch... The East India Trading Company to be exact...
Tons of conflict and wrecks exist throughout the ages there because of monopoly of the Dutch Formosa.

Do some searches on The Dutch Formosa if interested.

Wow! AARC that info was super helpful! Amazing! I am wondering if you have some idea of resources I can look at (either English or Chinese, either is ok). I will also google! I can PM you too if it is easier.

Thanks!

Oh... don't forget the Spanish occupation in the north as well.
Forgot to add.

If you are just going to walk the beach, I suggest you talk to members of the local dive shops around the island; they will have a good idea which beaches have produced the greatest yield of 'goodies'. For example, here's one: taiwan-dive
