In 30+ years of teaching I had to participate in many a planting or honoring ceremony. Can't begin to tell you where those naming recoreds are kept...
 

Yes I figure they are lost to time.
but if not disturbed yet I like the thought of someone pulling a bottle out
while digging a metal signal under a tree. and finding bottles with names in.

only downside I have never dug a corked bottle that didn't have
the cork destroyed and dirt or water seep in.

may be a good reason to be extra careful about checking when retrieving bottles
around schools, scout camps and other places that do such things.
