Not metal detecting, but a neat opportunity to do a supervised archeology dig at an historic site. Cut and pasted this from a local newspaper announcement:
Volunteers sought for hotel dig
Persons interested in Alabama history and archaeology have an opportunity to assist in the excavation of a historic former hotel building in old St.
Stephens Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The excavation of the Globe Hotel, circa 1815, will be conducted under the direction of archaeologist George Shorter of the University of South Alabama.
Volunteers are urged to bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Youth, 12 and under, must be accompanied by a parent. Previous excavation experience is not required. Tools will be provided.
For further information call the St. Stephens Historical Commission, 251-246-6790 or site manager Mike Breedlove Sr., 251-246-9788 or 251- 769-4634.
