Are these pieces from a catalytic converter?

My dad found these year ago. Someone said they might be pieces from a catalytic converter, and thus, possibly platinum. Any ideas on if this is true?

Yes. It's exactly what it looks like.

No clue about material, but I'd say it's cat-guts.

It is ceramic coated with platinum, rhodium and/or palladium.

I do agree they do look like the inside "honeycomb" element from a catalytic converter. You hear of some performance enthusiasts, hollowing out catalytic converters for a less restrictive exhaust and get better horsepower gains. There was a small fad of some getting stolen locally for the purpose of "recovering" the platinum from them and apparently there are certain vehicles that they were more commonly stolen from as their catalytic converters had a higher platinum content.

They must be bringing alot more than that around here. Theft is a major problem here. The local chevy dealer just had 20 stolen in one night!! Tony
