this was the final winner from $1000 bag of QTRS. note the covered initials-- and the long crack from rim with 2 IDB's/chips along the crack.

now have over 15 unique types of the "extra cactus" (the bottom coin in middle row also has a crack in different location). these are progressions of growth from same die and others are different dies.

bag left me holdin' 3 Caribou, a Balboa & a Dominican:BangHead::BangHead:----- and NO SILLBURR's :sad11::sad11:

I've never understood about errors in clad. I mean why would anyone assume that coins wouldn't have errors or think they are all perfect? I don't understand that. Do people really care about that stuff?
Seems common knowledge to me that lots of coins have errors and why is it a big deal?

It's worthless mass produced clad after all. Why would they be perfect in the first place?

Ah yes, the elusive "Extra Cactus." Any serious collector needs one.:laughing7:

errors in silver can be some serious cash or money---- whichever you prefer. I have held in hand once --- a Ben with DOUBLE CLAM SHELL lamination split planchet---- value about $400. my LCS never saw it, sold the coin for graysheet-- customer shows it to me---- I nearly wet myself--- he will save it for his daughter's college fund. "no date" CUD silvers can sell for HUNDREDS.

LORDY................. if you put bear scat in a wood box----- somebody WILL BUY IT:laughing9:

PEA have you been able to offload the extra cactus finds and if so (if you don't mind) for roughly how much? I've been sitting on 5 or 6 myself just not sure if I could sell as a lot (while keeping the best condition one for my own collection :) )

Thanks,
TwoYewts

I can see older silvers having value but clad? People really buy clad coins for errors?

There are entire books and websites dedicated solely to errors and varieties. What do you think?

1974-D DDO half dollar
1972 half dollar missing designers initials
1972 DDO Lincoln cent
1979 Susan B Anthony wide rim

The list goes on and on and on, but these are some of the more popular examples. I've seen each of these sold.

as noted, I have a pile of Cactus. think I have 1 listed in my store. guess the key is to group the progressing failure of a single die.
I have over a dozen '79-P SBA Close Date in inventory, with a lot of 3 for around $18.

some day the "Extra Leaf" or "Speared Bison" will get caught in my net :dontknow:

gotta post my major find from last night----- coming shortly..............................

I collect varieties, and I can assure you that few care about the extra cactus.

I clearly was answering the question I quoted.
I don't know anything about the extra cactus. We'll find out how much they sell for in an update, as PEA has been a resource to this forum instead of a black hole.

I can be a resource too. There's dozens of these minor class VIII doubled dies and microscopic clashes. There's the extra tree (Minnesota i think), the District of Columbia DDR, the Homestead quarter DDR, extra thumb '09 penny, doubled leaf Wisconsin, along with many, many more which I do not know off the top of my head or have yet to be discovered. They are common as flies, and the only one that anyone cares about is the Wisconsin because there is some debate about weather the die was engraved differently.

And yes, I do think a wall would help.

I have bought a couple of the minor varieties you mentioned death&taxes, but they were cheap and just for curiosity. I found a boatload of 1972 DDO Lincolns, Dies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 a few years ago and had a blast with them. Only a few of the die 1 and 2, but a ton of the others. I had maybe 40 slabbed. Some as high as ms65.

Any of the die 4s grade 65?

Silver has nothing to do with errors. Silver value and error value are two different things.

And I agree with the wall, couldn't hurt!

Personally, I think the wall should have a certain level of tourist appeal as well as serving the purpose of keeping the extra cacti out.

You are so impartial. Except for the fact that the sold auction you posted was for the extra cactus quarter that sold for the lowest price out of all of the sold auctions. Most sold for $2-3.

I'm sorry for being a dollar off. Should we send all of our extra cacti back to Mexico? Too many people are getting stabbed with their thorns.

Sharp!
Let me poke some holes in the whole argument.
Perhaps we should consider enlisting the extra cacti to reinforce the wall's defenses.
A thorn in our side, now on our side.
