IMO
Most likely it's part of a Nozzle but I'd def, make sure it's not a rare fuse.

+ Brass is Money in the bank.

My guess is ..water valve part, similar to a sink faucet handle guts thingie.
Handle fit over square part , and a leather or rubber washer was attached on the other end.

Ah, then must be the threads for turning it on/off - the twist type
