Assure me this isn't a diamond...

Found clad including a bicentennial quarter and 2 Canadian. Then the ring. It's perplexing for several reasons. The band material itself looks terrible. It LOOKS like potmetal, but the stamp inside the says 925. The photo doesn't represent the stamp well, but it does say 925. The gold part of the ring is definitely plated.

The 2nd thing is that the "shiny thing" sure looks like a diamond. The setting is open underneath. I found a 24K Gold necklace in the exact same baseball diamond recently.

Why would anyone ever have a diamond set into a cruddy quality band? I need yo all to reassure me that this isn't a diamond.

Nice finds!

You're probably right ~ I doubt anyone would put a real diamond in a sterling ring.

i doubt thats a real diamond
great finds, looks like you have a silver quarter, is it?

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

diamonds arent usually set into silver. maybe your local jeweler could look at it for you. even if its not a diamond its still a nice find!

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

While it is probably NOT a diamond. You might have it checked. Some friends of mine couldn't afford a diamond ring when they got engaged BUT later they had a diamond set in. The ring had sentimental value. That and some people don't care for gold.....

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

My sister has a diamond set in a silver ring, the diamond is very very small, but is still real. A diamond that big, in a silver ring, would definatly be of low quality. Even so, a size like that would still be pricy. It could be a diamond, maybe, a very low quality one. I'm guessing though its a just a CZ. Either way, its a nice find. Congrats on the 24k.

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

No, not a silver quarter, it's just in great shape. A 2003 even. For any coin to come out of the ground here in Seattle looking like that is amazing!

thanks for the feedback. I was having anxiety at the prospect of that being a diamond. I feel better now :D

Does the ring show any other numbers, or letters other than the 925 ? Sometimes alloyed platinum will be shown as 925 or whatever number, followed by a second number, (usually 1000, for the amount of platinum per 1000 whatever).

If it has the letters "PP", or "EP", it may be platinum plated (electro-plated) silver.

Both platinum plated and sterling silver diamond rings were given as "friendship", "commitment" and even "engagement" rings. I'm no authority on the matter, but both those rings look sort of Victorian to me. Thats what you get from watching too many episodes of the Antiques Roadshow on T.V. I'd guess its age to be anywhere from 1880 to 1930, but I could be way off, (just my gut instinct).

Easiest way to check on the diamond is to take the ring to at least one pawn shop where they have those electronic testers. If they say its not real, they may be telling the truth, but try either another pawn shop, or a jeweler. If the pawn shop say's its real, then it likely is.

Nice finds by the way. I'd be digging there again, for anything that beeps, trash or not.

Either way real or not you made some nice finds, but please let us know . Congrats

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

Yeah buddy, it won't hurt to have it checked at a pawn shop. If they tell you it's not a real diamond and then offer to buy it you might want to ask a jeweler. Keep your eye on them too. Very nice ring you found!!!

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

nice find .....now we get rain for next 6 days....at least...I'm in "T" town just south of you I got 11 coins today in 2 hours

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

Good Deal!! Nothing equals a ring! Well except for anything else you dig up!

I will have to research it a little further, but I know there are tests at home you can do such as putting it and water and it (supposedly) will be all but transparent if real (I think). If it were loose, I think you should be able to look through the back pointed end and be able to see through it (again, I think).
You might want to do a web check or post for ID tips in the gems postings for home tests.

Either that or keep digging and find one you know is real. Then compare. Simple, isnt it?! LOL

Cool ring! 8)

I'm hoping it's a diamond for you.

Please let us know when you get it checked out.

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

WhitesID,

That coin is dated 1967. It seems to have the same sort of wear pattern I see on silver coins, but apparently it ain't so.

hey Craig~ Maybe we can compare huntin spots sometime.

Maryland- I like your attitude!!

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

About that ring. Based on your knowledge of how deep it was found, you know its been down there awhile so its likely not a zircon, or a man made diamond. That leaves glass, paste as used in costume jewelry, or a real diamond.

Simple test. Just scratch some glass.

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

Greats digs, WTG!!!
Although they don't usually stick diamonds in silver these days I have heard that they use to in the old days... A trick I learned here on the forum, is to use a black light. It if glows a bright blue under the black light it, it could be real. If it still look white under the light, it's probably a fake...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Re: Assure me this isn't a diamond...

Real diamond or not...that is a nice ring !!! And it does look like an older style design.

Good finds. :)
