I got permission today to detect at 100 year old family homesite/farm. 23 acres at least one homesite, several barns, two drained ponds and who knows what else.Over the next few weeks im planning on giving the atp a workout out.Its never been detected and im still new to the atp,but I have my run of the place....any pointers on how to attack this would be greatly appreciated, also wanted to to know if anyone has detected old drained farm ponds before an r they productive

Sounds like a great opportunity! Take your time, concentrate on the areas around the existing and missing buildings. If you are trying to find where old buildings once stood, search with your iron audio on. When you get a large area with iron sounds, that's potentially where they tore an old building down. The ponds may have good targets if kids used to swim in them or they ever held fish.

Sounds like a GREAT place. If you dont have a 5x8 coil and a pro pointer might grab those. Sounds like you will have lots of opportunities to dig! Hit the ponds first! Might be GOLD!!!!! lol

that 100 year old homesite is just loaded with targets, even in the fields just hundreds of targets.Other than junk I found over a dollar in clad, with just one wheatie an two pieces of costume jewelry. Some heavy thickets near the house, but the biggest problem is a very large area in front of and on both sides of the house is 4 to 8 inches thick in packed down granite gravel. Its this layer that I found most of that modern clad (even a couple of state quarters),I believe this heavy layer may be too deep to get to older targets.........But on a good note was very surprised at some of the very tiny bits of junk the the atp was picking up even 3 and 4 inches down

Old home sites like the one you describe are a treasure trove of stuff, and most of that stuff is junk. I am doing one now and I must have dug a hundred old porcelain jar lids. I know the sound, the number but hey I still got to dig; you never know. I did find a neat thimble that belonged to the owners grandmother, now bear in mind the man that is allowing me to explore the site is in his late seventies. I checked along where the sidewalk was, nothing. I found a few pennies but they weren't old enough to get me excited.

Yesterday I was back to my parents home, I needed to hear the beep, and I found a brass sprayer for a hose about eight inches deep. I probably used that sprayer as a kid fifty or so years ago; I am in my sixties. What I don't understand is how the hell did it get in the ground so deep? I know my Pop never added any soil to his yard, or was anything ever dug or planted there. I am going to say it will still spay' it's intact with no damage.

I have a few places to still hunt but I need the brush to die so I can walk safely in the woods. I located a spot where I found some old coins 1875 and I want to explore the area more, who knows? Like my pop always said, "You never know when a blind squirrel will find an acorn." I'll keep looking.

Good report! Did you hun the whole place already?

I basically hunted most of the area around the house, but randomly.Went into the fields, where they apparently dumped all there trash. The fields have been leased out to someone growing corn and it seems that its been plowed and dirt moved around so much that there that the detector was signaling every few feet, there is so much trash scattered across those fields. But I found out that the house (which is burned out now)was being rented out up until a couple of years ago, which is why I think that several layers of gravel have been put down over the years.I had to use a pick axe to dig targets and some holes that gravel probally went down 8 inches or more, and coupled with the fact that is mixed in with clay made for some tough digging.A couple of the quarters I found were state quarters from 2000s and they were at least 6 inches down, thats why I believe the older targets are deeper. Its suppose to rain later this week and im gonna take the 5x8 off and put the stock coil on and go back over the yard after the rain

Yes damp ground usually brings out more goodies!

Like mentioned above, if used for swimming by folks other than you ya got a good shot at finding something worthwhile!

For me, stock tanks are a bust. They're on private property and always have been, so unless myself, mom, dad, or my brother lost something in there, no coins or jewelry to be found. And none of us lost anything.

I DID find an old steel feed bucket, bullets (from us boys popping nutria) a pair of fencing pliers, sinkers, a horseshoe, and some plastic ear tags with aluminum inserts.

It's a mental thing. If you know the history of the pond, you'd probably remember someone saying "I lost my 14K ring in there!" or the like...And it's just going thru the motions.

It's the NOT knowing... If it was someone else's stock tank and you don't know the entire history of who has been swimming there or whatnot, that's the thrill of the hunt!

If ya never hunted it before, id say hunt it!

It's easier to spend the day hunting it and finding nothing... That will afford you piece of mind that you cleared it.

The places ya skip tend to be the ones ya wake up at night wondering what's down there!!!
