A question for the experts. Can anyone help with info concerning the time frame or era that the transition was made between when the atlatl and atlatl dart was converted to the arrow? Maybe some discussion? Thanks, just looking for condensed info. Google is a vast world. c

Chadrack,

I am no expert, but I'll wade in. The transition happen during differant time periods, around the world. In north America, between 1500 to 1200 years ago. In Eurasia between 10,000 to 6000 years ago. My understanding is in Austria, they never did develop the bow and arrow technology. Also, I am sure that "parallel" technologies existed for thousands of years.

In France, atlatl's were used over 17,000 years ago. Over here, Folsom people used atlatl, maybe Clovis also. General dates for the first bow & arrow usage are around A.D. 200-A.D. 500 (1,500 - 1,800 years ago) on different parts of the continent.

I saw a program on the atatls on the history channel. The show was "Weapons Masters" It was very informative. I hope this helps.
