Look how long the shaft is and how big that coil is. The bigger the coil, the deeper the signal, right?

A Younger Charlie

......................Here is one that predates that catalog!!............This is a Garrett Sidewinder which is basicly a Hunter junior!.....................NO BELLS AND WHISTLES.................But at the time I thought that it just being able to detect metal was bells and whistles to me! No discrimination but it would null over the old square nails!!...............Joe

I OWNED that BFO - and a Coin Hunter TR, AND Groundhog, etc!

As a Texan, I am not sure why Charles and I never met! :-)

Maybe it's time (hint hint)

........................HERE'S MY COMMENT ON THE PERSON (in the catalog) USING THE LARGE COIL.................................Actually that is a 12 by 24 inch coil which was not there largest coil!!.............................HERE'S MINE..................

........................The 12 by 24 inch coil is hard to find today! Maybe not that many were made to begin with!!?? I believe that Garrett made 2 versions ..................one was for the BFO and the other was for their original VLF !(with no TR discriminate!!)..............HOW DEEP COULD THESE PENTRATE?? Depends on the size of the Model T !!!.......LOL.............I keep mine mainly for sentimental reasons plus it is good for finding bottle dumps, septic tank lids, etc....................Joe

M...................................Melvin, no button at the end of the handle! These were made in the days before the invention of the retune button/switch! Some of us constantly had our fingers on the tuning dial! The Zero-Drift was good most of the time but if one wandered from the heat of the day and into the shade of a tree..........these would still drift somewhat!!..................................Joe

...............Melvin...............on 2nd glance............you must have been referring to the detectors in the old catalog! Yes, that is a retune switch .............it just retunes the detector back to the point where it was initially done withe the tuning knob on the control panel! This device helped later to save a lot of time and frustration!!.................Joe

I liked the first advertisement that says the coil is "grassproof," among other things! :P
Very cool walk down memory lane.

........................................................I do not know Charles personally but thru a Garrett dealer...............I heard that he is retired or semi-retired/ he is not involved as much with his company as he use to be/ Charles must be in his late 70's or 80's!! Not sure about his TH'ing activities at this time??....................................Joe

.........................WET GRASS USE TO BE A PROBLEM with the BFO type detectors....................As this was a long time ago................I don't remember if it just caused the detector to be erratic or actually caused a false signal??!!.................Joe
