Well I went back to the park that I've been detecting for the last few days. It was cold and then it got colder and started to rain so I got to test out my new cold/wet weather gear. Nice and toasty and dry. Aside from my gloves which got soaked.

My surprise for the day was when I found a curious shaped heavy brass piece which had the words Excelsior 6 Lever on it. I had no idea what this was. When I got home this evening a quick google search showed that it was from a padlock which was made circa 1850 by a US company in New England Connecticut. That padlock is a long way from home.

I also found a nice silver sixpence, a rough penny and what appears to be a musket ball. I don't think it would have been fired but dropped by one of the local militia or police in the 1800s.

I'll be going back tomorrow.

Cool looking 6 pence :)

Silver always makes my day :)

nice finds there mate.

Nice shiny sixpence Breaker,
my silver is nearly always as black as you know what!
Your ACT soil must have been neutralised by all the Polly droppings over there!

Could have something to do with the water quality ;)

Seriously though, I get big variances in how the coins come out of the ground from perfect coppers to destroyed ones but I guess we're lucky as silver usually comes out shiny.

Nice finds Harry! HH, Mike

Re SA Water
That could be it, even our fresh water is salty! Murray river coins are as corroded as they come!!! saw some one of our club members found in the river two weeks ago and they were absolutely rooted!!!! Mind you some of those Polly droppings must be coming down the river.
