Been a rock hound my whole life, but somehow I have only been recently found this forum. Lots of good reading! I found this rock around Mt Augustus in Western Australia some years back. I’ve always wondered what it could be. It didn’t look like anything else I found in the area. If the pictures aren’t sufficient for a decent guess, I can take some tomorrow in the daylight. I do not live in Western Australia, that’s just where the rock is from. Thanks

It started out a sedimentary rock, that's for sure by the banding. Looks to me like it was metamorphized. My wild guess is quartzite, but I don't know Aussie rocks so count this as a guess. Gary

Banded Iron Stone. Nice coloration. I have some in my collection as well from my trips to WA.

Thank you so much! I have long wondered and now I know. One of my favorite stones I have ever found and now it has an id.

Its pretty common in Western Australia. I've seen examples of it polished up really nice but have found stuff like yours that nature has polished just fine. Have fun and see ya in the threads.
