It looks like a big head with a long blade. The shape suggests a felling axe and it appears to be machine made (rather than made by a blacksmith.) There are publications that relate axe shapes to their provenance, which may help. There also may be a makers mark on it hidden by the rust. If so, that could narrow it down too.

It’s a common axe, but an older style, civil war period.
