Has the wider end been sharpened? Could you post a picture with a side view? I have found a number of celts that had very little work to the distal end and a very nice bit.
Hi Broken Knee, I found it in an old house 1860 in Ontario Canada that I have just bought, under boxed in stairs that I was repairing covered in dust and when I picked it up the wood underneath was clean.
That is a petty big celt you have there. Definitely worked by man and not a geofact. Do you have anyone local that could give it a quick check for authenticity, looks authentic from the pictures but repros have been made for close to a hundred years if not longer. Great find!
Glencoe, The celt is essentially an axe or wood-working http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_was_an_Indian_Celt_used_for#tool with a hatchet-like cutting edge. The celt does not have a groove or other modifications for mounting, but was inserted into a socketed wooden handle. HH
