Found this axe head in a field where the owner said a house used to be. The house most certainly dated back to at least the mid to late 1800's, since the 80+ year old land owner said that it was abandoned during his youth and the stories were the house belonged to freed slaves who worked on the farm.

Anybody have any insight into the design or date?

Axe heads are interesting. Got 4 or 5 myself.
 

I'm thinking it may be blacksmith forged.
 

I have NO IDEA and would like to know maybe how old mine is also. My grandkids found it about it about 8" down using an old White's Coinmaster MD. Yours looks much older though... This one was found in the woods with nothing around.
