Yes, that's how they forge those and they go back at least to Civil War era, because that's how the axe heads are I find on all Civil War sites and how they are identified as to being Civil War era. Later axes (although I'm no axe expert for sure) do not have that split forged seam down the back side.

I found my first ask Ed to days ago as a matter fact congratulations. Mom had a large amount of caked on lost so I have it soaking in Evapo-Rust as we speak. Yours looks real nice congratulations again
