Back to the New Farm Permission.... Got a Big Copper and More Indian Relics Yesterday

So I tried to type up this story yesterday but couldn't finish because I had to head into work for the night shift. I have made 3 trips to the new farm so far since my last post but due to there not being a lot of finds I decided to just put them all in this post.

Yesterday after hunting for about 2 hours digging modern bullets from people target practicing and some old musket balls I got a nice high tone on the Equinox that read 29-30. I suspected I had some type of silver or a large cent but didn't get myself too excited until I confirmed it and popped it out of the hole. It turned out to be a 1846 tall date Braided Hair Cent, and it made my day. She is a tad crusty but I just love digging big coppers no matter what the condition is. Before the hunt was over I was also able to snag a chert knife blade, a small flint scraper and a possible small gun flint or tiny scraper which measures 5/8"x 3/4".



Here are a few finds from the earlier hunts. Several musket balls a 1900 and a 1865 Indian cents, a silver ring and some flint. I really like this flint knife blade my wife found.

I love sites where you can metal detect and eyeball Indian artifacts at the same time. The knife looks like it was touched up a few times over the course of it's usefulness.
This piece, which you maybe calling the small gun flint, is actually an Indian artifact I believe.

​ I believe it one of these small rectangular pieces like the one in the lower right corner of this pic. I saw two of these come from this particular field - worked on all four sides, but no real sharp edge like a scraper. I have no idea what they would be used for - maybe a blank for a small bird point? It doesn't have the characteristics of a gunflint.

Yes, I love this type of site, it was used into the early 1800's by the Indians. I appreciate your thoughts on the small flint, some of these things are hard to call especially with overlapping time periods of use. I should have said possible gun flint and mentioned it measures 5/8"x 3/4" which is the size of a small gun flint and the side that points up in the photo has a uniface edge which lead me to lean toward gun flint, but still could be either. I will add a couple more pics of it here to see what you think.

Now I'm leaning more toward gun flint with some plow damage which is why the faces don't look smooth.

Great finds there! Definitely love the old coppers but the Native American Artifacts are even better! Interesting stuff!
