Since you asked for ID... it is a "White-Tombac" 1-piece button from the 1700s to early-1800s. See the DAACS dating-chart, below.

I should mention, your button's metal is called White-Tombac because it is silver-ish color, whereas ordinary Tombac is a golden-ish (not yellow) version of brass.

To answer your question it's just a random pattern. There are some early military, very few, but also very obvious when you see them.
