Guess this should be titled “what happened to it” instead of “what is it”.

Found this a few years back around an old stable. Hadnt thought about it in a while, until I saw the dryer coin posting earlier today. Has anyone ever found one in similar shape, or have a guess as to what caused this/why?

Yikes! Hard life! Since you said you found it around an old stable, I wonder if the manure and trampling would cause this damage. If it were mine I'd be tempted to rub the side of it with an Andre's Pencil to see if the discoloration is limited to the surface.

I think it is a 1894 Barber Dime. At least that is what my coin snap says it is NICE FIND 1!
