Battlefield brass....what is it???

I found a piece of brass that is a little unusal. It has some
pretty cool designs on the front of it, and some kind of "swivel"
hole in the back. Part of the left side is broken off, but I would
still like to know what it is.
This was found at Antietam Battlefield.

just a guess some type of side plate for a gun ?

Easy (as I find bits nearly every detecting day), part of an old buckle, probably a shoe buckle (1790s?)
