I am going to the Florida Keys this week-end so I called the DNR & asked about MD'ing regulations in the Keys.
They said from the dune to the high tide mark. So thinking that perhaps their concerned about erosion I ask is this why I shouldn't dig the wet sand?

No, It's leased out! The beach is leased out to treasure hunters! I guess you guys already knew that but it's news to me :-[

Nice to know that our civil liberties are being steadily eroded for profit :-\

is there many fresh water beaches around your neck of the woods?, long way to drive down to the keys, just to hunt the beaches only, thats way i never went down there.

Sadly this is more true in some areas than others. The states involved receive money from the lease where they don't get a dime from recreational treasure hunters. Course we can count our lucky stars that they aren't required to purchase a detecting permit or license like game hunters.

It is actually safe to hunt from the base of the dune to the MEAN LOW TIDE LINE, see Florida on the Leagel Forum for more info and reference back up material. Not that there is much in the way of dune or beach down in the Keys. This picture was taken last year at one of our parties on Key West after a hurricane. Notice the relationship of the sand to the pavilion and the picnic table on the left. It was just an irritant until the rum began to flow.

ever try daytona, or new smyrna beaches, lots of beaches in florida..may have to checlk out the legal forum as well, as i am getting back into MD'ing and my girlfriend is also..gregg

here in Pinellas County (fl) you have to get a permit to hunt the beach dry sand, there free but you still have to have 1... matter of time before they charge you a fee

Where do you get that permit at, just in case I need one sometime?

As far as I know the only place you need a permit in Pinellas County is Fort Desoto. All the other beaches are open as Wreck Diver stated.

Good Luck and HH

wat beaches are in pinellas county? still in the shopping stage right now for a detector, as i sold my old one year or so ago, i want to do beaches, creek beds, and also land detecting as well..gregg

good luck on your hunting beaches..

Good day all,
Just wanted to update you, I'm afraid all I found was trash with most of it 2-5" down.
Also the beaches were pretty rocky wich is fine but it was laborious getting to the item in question.
I had my selecter set pretty low because there was a lot of metal. I find that aluminum and gold give me kind of the same response on my detector.

I approached a park ranger in one of the state park areas & he looked sceptical and tried to discourage me but couldn't really tell me "no metal detecting". He did say that I couldn't remove anything although he omitted the 50 year rule. Funny how that is.

Anyway, thannks for your feedback.
