While out hunting the beach today I saw another detectorest hunting the high deep sand. Didn’t talk with him and don’t know who he was but when I made my way to where he was hunting I saw something that really bugs me.

Open dig holes four to five inches wide and eight to ten inches deep some had corroded aluminum sitting by some holes, on a public beach with kids, dogs and bare foot moms and pops. I covered the holes I saw and picked up the shrapnel but I don’t know how many more there were.

Man I think this is so un-cool and un-called for, there’s a trash can by most public entrances and some of the holes were right by an entrance.

In the hopes this person reads this post there’s one thing I’d like to say.
There’s one funny note,,,the only quarter I found today was when I was covering one of the holes, wasn’t swinging, and got a coin hit less than a foot from the hole I was covering.

There now I feel a little better. I thought about this all afternoon and just can’t let it go.

Ditto on the Beach Rant!

Their out there and your right...its really annoying.

My feeling is that they dont care either.

Gold Digger, thanks for the reply. I’m wasn’t sure if I’m speaking out of place or not, I’m very new to metal detecting, but it would seem common sense would play at least a small roll.?

Kinda wish I could arrange a group hunt in his front yard.

Gold-digger, your not alone in seeing these slobs messes. I tried to help one young guy once but he told me to mind my own business and get out of his area. It ticked me off enough that I reported him to the ranges and they went out to hand him a ticket. I never seen him back in that park again nor his holes. Makes me wonder if these guys would ever log on to Treasure Net or any forum.

Just my two cents.

I hate it when I walk up on uncovered holes, I feel anyone who sees me will think I left them since I am the only one within eye shot. I cover them up and move on, a little perturbed.

I have walked 40 or 50 yards from where I was hunting to put a large piece of broken glass I found in the surf in a trash can. Didn't want to take a chance putting it in my pouch and cutting my fingers later on, and I wasn't about to leave it in the surf, even though I had on shoes, the next person most likely want.

Drver, thanks for cleaning up after the knucklehead. I've cleaned up after my share of these people. I've confronted a few of them. I explain to them that leaving trash and large holes makes us all look bad. Some people just don't care. I just dispose of all the trash I come across and fill my holes. I try to make us all look good and I think I do a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. ;D

your busted willie :o :D

i guess some guys think that because they are on a beach that they dont need to cover thier holes and take out thier trash. theres one in every crowd.

This is where a local dealer talks to the new buyer and stresses the importance of filling the holes, picking up trash, etc. Mail order and ebay can not converse with the buyer.

Thanks all for the replies.

I’ve only been metal detecting for a couple of months now and I try to look at the positive side of every argument... After applying the twenty four hour rule here’s what I think.

I guess there’s allot of nice folks who buy or borrow a detector and just don’t know,,, reading a book, checking the internet, or talking to someone who has hunted before and you’ll learn cover you’re holes is one of the top must do. I mean how many trowels do you see on the beach?
That’ll probably be another detector collection dust in someone’s closet soon. Kind of a shame.

Yea yesterday I was really ????no good word here,,, but twenty four hours later well disappointed fits.

My Ace 250 came with a book and a CD, included with the instructions were the top ten detecting manners.
So I guess
1) the rules need to be seen and understood.
2) said person needs to give a s@#t.

A quote from another site.

“Always cover your holes even on the beaches, so people that are walking or jogging don't twist their ankle, because they rarely look where they're going! Always take the trash you dig up with you. A lot of times we get home and go through our trash, and discover things we thought was junk and it wasn't.”

Right. There are jerks everywhere.

Me, I use one of those "waitress aprons" that I got at the local Smart & Final store. It has three pockets, and I use one for finds, another for tools, and the third for trash. The third gets filled up fast at the beach, I empty it at one of the HUNDREDS of trash cans set out by the city. And I always fill my holes, even if they are in the surf-wash and the waves will fill them in pretty quickly anyway. And the only other dectorists I've met all feel the same way.

It's those like you met that ruin it for the rest of us. But then again, common sense is very uncommon! Kudos to you for being one of those with it!

I've been detecting on and off since '96. Even when I started ( I was in law school... it kept me sane) it would bug me when i saw dig holes. Pissed me off even more when the pull tabs were lying on the ground next to them. I agree with everyone else. Those kinds of actions tend to give us (MDers) a bad name.

I actually got stopped once by a guy complaining about the holes. I was at a local beach, and after listening to him rant for about 5 minutes before i could get a word in edgewise, I explained to him that it wasn't me, and if he noticed my tracks, all the holes were covered.

Most of the MDers i've seen, including the pics of guys here on the forum, have a multi-pocketed pouch. And what do they do when they dig pull tabs? They put them in the pouch. How hard is it to put the garbage in the pouch? It isn't. And what the newbies, or the uncaring don't realize is 1) they're going to get a bad reputation and get MDers banned or restricted from searching certain places, and 2) more importantly... if you leave the trash there this time... you're just going to find it again next time!!!
