BEACH REBUILDING AT GAL.

Hurricane " IKE " washed out most of the beach the whole length of Galveston Island
so now they are going to rebuild it. The plan is to scrape up 500,000 cu/yds up on
the east end of the island and truck it down to the west end of the seawall and build
it out 200 ft. and 5 ft. deep all the way back up to where they started and then bring
in a off shore dredge and cover where they started. I can't help but wonder how the
detecting will be not only during all this but when it's all over? Havent heard if we will
be allowed to get on the beach while this work is going on or not. This is several miles
of beach and then they are going to start going the other direction from the end of the
seawall and do the same thing to the other end of the island. Detecting is always a hit
or miss thing at best but I think this will be the mother of all CRAP SHOOTS.

JG I have not gone down to the west end for several reasons. One is that it was torn up
so bad with so many homes there and the people trying to recover what they could
I thought it would be in very bad taste for me to be pokeing around down there with
a detector. Also from what I seen on Satellite photos and from what the beach patrol told
me there is very few places you could park your car and still a great deal of debris to
be removed, but that was a month or more ago so I can't say what it's like now. I think
the biggest problem would be finding a place to park where your car would be safe to
leave. I have been doing my time at east beach but have not been to get down there for
the last three weeks or so. They were scraping sand then so no telling what it is like now.

Hey XT and Just I live on the westend at 9 mile road and went out for a little time today. The beaches are still full of debris. I did get a few dirty looks but I got hurt as bad as them and need a day out. Pickings were poor even at a place that is always good for a few bucks in clad.They are working 7 days a week to clean the beaches and might be good hunting then. I do not think they will bring in sand west of the seawall but will have to wait and see.
