Hey Folks!
Off to the NC Coast near Wilmington this weekend... it'll be my first time at the beach with my MD! woohoo!

Any advice from you seasoned MDers?
Get a good long handled sand scoop. Attach it to your belt with a rope and drag it behind you. It will let you know where you have been.

If your detector is not waterproof, stay away from the water. You will, no matter how hard you try not to, drop it in the water and that makes for a very bad day.

Find the towel line---where people usually set up their towels. It is the area where you will find most of the modern stuff.

And around the travel paths to the beach. Lots of stuff dropped there.

Look for cuts in the sand from the tides and waves. Not sure if they sand the beaches where you are going. If they do, it will be slim pickings until a storm washes all the sand away.

Detect the shell piles. Sometimes you can find some really neat things in those shell piles.

Bring sunscreen. Hours go by as minutes when metal detecting and the sun will cook you alive.

Don't forget to bring water or a cold drink in a cooler.

If someone asks you if you found anything, tell them just a bunch of pull tabs. You've got to watch now that the economy is not very good. Lots of people will take advantage of you if you show them a valuable find.

Don't get frustrated if you don't find much. Beach detecting is real popular and there are lots of folks doing it. It is one of the tougher ways of MD'ing. But it can be rewarding.

You have to be there at the right time....usually very early in the morning or just after the sun goes down. That way there is no one on the beach and you can detect almost everywhere. If the city or county drags the beaches, the sand machines will pick up a lot of the stuff that was dropped the day before. So you need to get there early.

If you have a waterproof machine and you are going in the water, then you will need a wetsuit. The sea is still cold and it will be tough going. Watch for stingrays and jellyfish.

And my final advice is HAVE FUN!

Steve, all great advice just a little late for meeulk as she was visiting the beach last month.

To add to your list, increase your odds by getting a local tide chart. Early morning is nice because there are fewer people on the beach but if it is high tide your odds decrease. I am heading down to OBX in June and have already checked the tide charts online. Got lucky for this trip as I will have some great low tides around dinner time. Also some prime time detecting at sunrise.
