As far as cleaning, I would leave it as is.

Once that green patina/crust is removed, more than likely it will reveal an unpleasant, pitted look. A quick way to tell is to look at the rim very carefully with a 5x or 10x loupe.
If you see any deep, noticeable chips along the edge, that's a good indication that you should NOT try to clean.

As far as preserving (leaving the green patina intact), I use melted bee's wax and GENTLY rub off excess with a soft cloth.
