Hey everybody, I was looking at some old maps and come across this house site. I thought I would share it with you guys. Not too far away from the house was the barn, which is now cement walls. I also discovered a really cool stoned lined well. My dog was very curious about it lol. Across from the house and barn is a big open farm field, which seems ideal for Metal Detecting. It was snowing out, so that's what you will see in the pictures. Anybody know how to tackle this site? Where to start? Also does anybody know what is in picture #9?

Pic 9 looks like a water trough.
There is an uncovered well on an abandoned property that I hunt. I made a cover for it out of scrap treated lumber. Was worried about my dog falling in it. Or even a person.

Can't help you with pic 9, but wanting to confirm... pics 2-5 area a well, yes?? I found something similar on a site I'm working, but at the moment it is only about 18" deep. I have only just started with the site, so I didn't spend too much time with it since I wasn't sure what I was dealing with.

As for how to work the site... I am by no means an expert (I'm just getting started in this hobby), but I would say it depends on what your goal is... I would imagine if you're looking for coins, I'd start around the house foundation. Relics, I'd start around the barn. Easy swinging, the open field. If it was me, that is the order I'd do it in... take a machete and clear out a 10'x10' area and detect. Then, move over to the next 10'x10' area and put all your debris on the first one. Rinse and repeat. Granted it's long hard work, but on the plus side, it makes it pretty easy to keep track of where you have and haven't detected. Good luck and keep us posted!!

Just get in there and start swinging your detector. That spot shoud keep you busy for a while. HH

The bottom left pic. is a watering trough probably for horses. I have one on my farm. The pipe in the well points to house location.
All your pictures are closeups so it's hard to guage the relationship of the structures. With the overgrowth, I would have a tendency to check the 'interior' of the walls which are probably less overgrown. Since the foundations are laid up without mortar, I would check them. Loose stone hiding places were more popular than known.
If I did it, I would give it a fast passover with my 2 Box which I could work above the overgrowth. Then I would look for the paths (LOW AREAS) that were used.
It looks rough, good luck. Frankfive star.webp

Cool, I think you and Frankn are right about the water trough. Thanks

I knew picture 2-5 was a well, I just wanted to know about pic 9, and thanks for the tips.

I'd also try to find the outhouse location. You'll probably find more good relics there than anywhere else on the property.
