What in your opinion is the best detector for relic hunting in the 200-250 dollar range? I may upgrade soon. wasnt able to get one for christmas but maybe afterwards ill have enough money for it :) The sites i hunt usually have lots of nails that i dont want to dig and lots of bigger iron relics i want to dig, also i want to dig any non-ferrous metals.

I know :D Was hoping there is a detector more suited to relic hunting than just general detecting. would use it for occasional beach/coin hunting though.

$200 to $250 won't get you anything in the "Relic" detector Dept. Jake. Won't get anything better than an ace 250 for that price...

Spend $450 to $500+ and you can get a nice "used" relic machine. Go $700 & up, and you'll get a brand new one...

I would go used, I have seen some high nice detectors for that price. I have heard good things about the cibola and you can pick them up for that price but they go fast. Also older fisher cz5 s and whites eagles can be picked up and are great detectors! Good luck.

I don't know beans about relic hunting Jake but around this part of the country Fisher is king. I see an awful lot of nice relics recovered wth a Fisher unit. For $200 to $250, you are not going to be upgrading at all! Prices have gone up since you bought your entry level machine. I'd recommend you find some part time job after school a couple of hours an evening and save until you can move up into the $500 to $600 range if you really want to improve. BH does have some machines in the $300 to $400 range that will serve you well, much like the one I told you about. I don't know if your folks realize it or not but you can learn a lot more about history from finding and researching relics with a detector than you will ever learn in a text book. KY ou might sit down and just list some of the things you have learned since starting metal detecting, write it up in an essay and show it to our folks. Who knows it might help you persuade them to let you get a better detector? If one of my kids had done that it would work for me! Monty

All i want is a detector that can find stuff kinda deep and can be set to find only non-ferrous and large iron or can be set to find anything. As far as my parents they think the hobby is great along with all the historic relics i find, its just they dont have that much money to spend on oen right now. I may try and get a job soon, but its nearly impossible in my town, the population is only like 7,000 and there isnt many places hiring...i may work in my moms flower shop answering the phone and stuff this summer though :) Ill have to dig through my coins and see if i have any worth selling that i dont really care about.

Hey Jake, I have an ACE250 and am looking for a deeper machine. I think for the money the ACE250 is a great deal, but you may want to step up a little. I have been eyeing a couple used Tesoro Cibolas. This detector is very deep and simple to use. People using it said iron descrimination is great too. You can find these machines used for $250-300, but its more in line with what you are using it for. Just a thought!!!

Use your good old American initiative. Make up a special Christmas bouquet and go around the neighborhood selling them. Tell folks you're trying to earn Christmas money which would be true! How could they turn you down? Ask your Mom if you can do it for a percentage of the cost. Bet you could make your detector money in no time. There are any number of ways to make a few bucks if you just use your head and you seem to be a bright fellow! Monty

Try to find a used Tejon or an X5. I heard their monsters for relic hunting. You can find them used but there gonna cost more than 200>250

Thanks for the tip, the cibola looks like a great machine with a ton of depth. How is the discrimination on it? I looked around and it seemed it was around 340.00 new, i couldn't find it on kellyco though......

Hey Jake, The big "k" is not a Tesoro dealer. Keep looking on EBay, they're always on there. Some of the dealer classifieds also offer Cibolas now and then as well!!!! ;) I gotta save alot of clad before I can get mine- Good luck to you!!!!

Tesoro Cibola--end of story.

It's out of your $250 range but well worth the extra $100.

The Ace 150 & 250 are nice coin hunters but fall short in the relic category.

I saw a used one(cibola) on another treasure site for? 180.00 .I sent an email but the thing was sold .The guy said he had about 28 emails.

Dont be in a hurry shop around and buy a better quality machine. If you are after used go to a dealer they are always getting top quality older models traded in. Remember detectors even the latest top models dont go any deeper than the top models a couple of years ago. Most of the gains in the latest models have been in the better discrimination and identification of targets. If you want a good machine which has excellent depth and can be used for relic hunting and beach hunting and will not be affected by salt go for the Minelab Sovereign. It was first produced about ten years ago and is still made with only a couple of minor changes, but even the oldest model will still beat some of the latest brands in performance. Definitely beat the garrett 250 all round. look in www.minelabowners.com for information
