I was just wondering what would be the best setting for the beach , I normally hunt the wet first at low tide and I move to the dry sand ,, I think I'm missing some good targets because of improper settings. Guzz1
I set mine like this: volume at max, disc and notch fully to the left (0 setting), threshold just audible, sens I will vary by location but generally from 3 oclock to 1oclock. What you might try is next time you get a deeper signal, play around with your controls and see if you can bring the signal up better.
With the Sov its hard to tell if your sens is to high, it wont chirp like a Tesoro or similiar detector, so you have to play around with it for your area. I hunt the ocean beaches in NJ and having my sens between 3 oclock and 1 oclock will get me coins and rings down 12" no problem and iron is easily identified. Also it gives the detector a faster reset on the threshold after it nulls. Try this and you will see what I mean, it works great.
If your beaches have a lot of iron bits you might even try a lower sens setting. Here I can turn my sens just right out of auto (max setting) and the Sov will not chirp or be unstable, however it will false on iron and ground minerals, I will get ghost signals and it takes much longer for the detector to reset out of a null.
Why run a threshold on the beach? On super deep targets you will probably get just at threshold rise or lowering, depending on the target. The detector wont ring out like on a shallower target, your threshold hum will change pitch is all. I then reset my threshold by passing my scoop over my coil and relocate where that change occured and do a bit of digging and have found plenty of deep targets this way.
And inland at a park with alot of trash try the lowest sens setting, it really helps and you still get great depth.
If you cant find a target thats when I go to all metal. Its deeper than disc and doesnt seem to be effected by the air as much, such as in an open hole.
