As many of you may know, I'm new to MD'ing but I seems to me it is better to go with in the next 2 days after it rains.
Here in East Tn, that red clay is hard to dig when dry.
It can be better to go out after the rains as the soil is softer and easier to dig, but to us anytime is time to go detecting. The only thing that keeps us from detecting everyday is work, but that is ok as it is work that supports our addiction to metal detecting

After a light rain isn't bad. Too much rain and you risk getting all muddy and wreaking the grass your playing in. Same thing around here, dry=tough as concrete.
Countrykid, first I agree with Stoney. But as i'm in East TN to I seem to have much better luck and finds after a good rain. Much more muddy but better hits.HH
What you're referring to Countrykid is known by many of us as the Halo effect.
Decomposing metal in the ground produces a halo which is enhanced by the
moisture from the rain. This is why you're picking up targets easier. This can be
good or bad depending on the type of targets you're looking for.
The most effected metal is iron.So unless you can mask or discriminate iron
you will detect more of these targets after it rains.
I know for a fact though that it has helped me pull some older, deeper
coins and relics from areas with relatively low trash. Playin in the mud is fun!
Good luck and Happy Huntin!
