50% mo silver -- simple as dat.

I believe you answered your own question is a weird sort of way.

90%'s are 90% silver.
40%'s are 40% silver, hence, they are mixed with more non-silver material, aka clad.

That was the lehman's answer, maybe someone has a more technical answer :laughing7:

Mixing the three gold family metals gives you different colors. The surface of those 40% Silver half Dollars are actually 80% silver. The core is somewhere close to 20% Silver. Those 2 metals are clad together in different amounts to net a total of 40% silver.

The difference you see is really the difference between 90% silver and 80% silver.

Awesome!! I knew someone knew the technicals. Great job!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I am glad mdocker was able to lay that out, cause when I read this post, I thought to myself, "I have seen 64's that are bright shiny and beautiful, and I have seen 64's that are dull, and plain to look at, dull enough that compared next to a bright shimmery 40% they would look like clad." That is what I love about finding silver in the wild. I find myself staring intently at each silver just looking at the different "colors" and color schemes. It seems that every one of them has its own personality. In fact I said that the other night, unfortunately out loud to my wife... she already thinks im crazy with this new hobby- got the typical eye roll laugh from her... That was even after I let her open the two rolls with 90%'ers in them. She still thinks I am a nerd geek most of the time, but she is coming around.

Is it just me or does the 1964 Kennedy have a brighter looking sheen than a 40% Kennedy?I have noticed that when I pull a 64 out of a roll even before lookin at the date I can tell its a 64.It might just coincidence but just wondering if there might be a better sheen on a 90% versus a 40% coin.As always thanks for any input.

the 40% coins are a clad layer of 800 silver on a layer of something else mostly copper low silver alloy, i dont remember exactly, but thats one reason why
