Big brass whatzit….

Found this at an 1800's farm. It's bent and the inside is concave. Looks like it could hold a baseball sized or a little bigger item where the curved part is. 4 bars go around it. Maybe it was for al old light? Any help

My first thought was it's a cage for a explosion proof light, but haven't seen any that have that object sticking out of it.

Although it would be tough to remove the tray with the 4 bar cage.
