Big Clad ! Little Silver!

Hi ya gang! How have you all been? Me? Oh I’m doing just fine. My BP could be lower... working on that, but other than a few all too familiar aches and pains, aint it hell getting older?, I’m doing just fine. I was off today, no errands to run, no chores or yard work to do, and nobody asking for my time, so I got to get out and play for a while today! Yay! Of course you all know by now that “Play” translates to METAL DETECTING!! <smile> I grabbed my gear and a bottle of water and headed out to one of my favorite sites, a big soccer complex in a neighboring town... just down the road from where I live. Here in Central Kentucky today it was a gloriously beautiful Autumn day... Temperatures in the low seventies, no humidity, a light breeze... it just doesn’t get much better. All the kiddies were still in school so I had the park all to myself. I’ve hunted this park dozens of times in the past but I’ve only been there a couple of times this year. I picked out one of the playing fields to hunt today... Grid hunt... mowing the lawn so to speak. I covered the entire (full sized regulation) field in just over three and a half hours. That is, once I made it to the field. I was getting targets two steps from my truck as I walked towards the field. Right off the bat man! I dug up fifteen pennies within a three foot square. Pennies! So it was going to be one of those days huh? Well that’s what I thought anyway... I guess all those pennies right off the bat kind of gave me that mindset... Boy was I to be proven wrong! Still though, there were quite a few pennies to be found today, including a lot of melting Zincolns... like this particularly bad specimen...

Zincoln Comp.webp

Oh but the coin of quantity today was to be clad quarters. I found LOTS of quarters! WooHoo! I found some other nice coins too... Big coins... Not one, but TWO Kennedy Halves! Too bad they weren’t silver... *sigh* I also found one lone little Sacagawea Dollar coin. I scratched it, but I guess that’s no biggie since it’s only a Sac Dollar.

Big Comp.webp

There were several dimes found, but again, no silver. I thought I might have found one silver dime, but what came up from the plug turned out to be a little pin.

Pin Comp.webp

Brazilian Soccer Pin? Versailles Kentucky is a long way from Brazil. <shrug> They do host tournaments at this park, perhaps someone visiting there had played in Brazil at some time or another. Oh well, we may never know, but it was a pretty neat little find all the same. More, pennies, more quarters... and absolutely NO Nickels. That’s weird. I did find a bunch of pull tabs, but only one Coke Rewards plastic bottle cap. That’s weird too.

Cap n Tab.webp

Oh sure, there was the usual can slaw and foil wrappers that drive us and our detectors nuts. I found lots of that kind of trash. In fact I nearly missed one very neat find because there was so much trash around it that I nearly didn’t dig it. I’m glad I did though. I finally found some SILVER!!!! Yeah Baby! Silver in the form of a very small ring.

Ring 1.webp

There are designs or runes or something engraved or stamped into the face of the ring, not sure if they mean anything or if they are just random “art work”... anyone have any ideas?

Ring Comp.webp

I guess I could have cleaned it up a little better, some of the “runes” have some dirt still in them, but the 925 stamp is clearly visible... if tiny...

Ring Proof.webp

Yeah, it’s tiny, but it’s silver! Cool! Finding the first Kennedy half, would have made my day, but finding two of them made it a good day indeed. Add another big dollar coin and I was grinning from ear to ear. Putting silver into the finds bag was call for a Happy Dance!!! Boy am I glad there was no one else at the park. That might have been embarrassing. So would my mad dash for the nearest porta potty. <blushing> We’ve all had the urge sneak up on us while we’ve been metal detecting at one time or another. Admit it... even you. There you are out there just swinging away, making finds and digging up treasures and suddenly and very persistently, Mother Nature comes a calling. Oh My! Maybe I shouldn’t have drank two bottles of water with my lunch. Oh well, what’s done is done, and what will be will be running down my pant legs if I didn’t make it to the lieu too. Fortunately I didn’t have to go very far... the fun part was unbuckling all my gear to get to my... uh “gear” before I popped a seal. I did make it though. Whew! What’s the big deal? Normally I’m not very bashful if I have to go, any bush or tree will do in a pinch, but out in the middle of a wide open field backing up to a subdivision with windows and doors facing me from every angle, well, discretion is the better part of valor so to speak. Modesty has its place after all. Thank goodness for porta potties! There were some more coin recoveries after my, uh... short break, but the hunt was winding down. When I finished sweeping the side lines on the far side of the field from where I started, I called it a day and headed home. A little tired, but very happy with my hunt for the day. I dumped my finds bag out onto a plate when I got home to sort through the treasures.

Everything.webp

All that digging got me a pile of dirty clad and treasures. I had already trashed the can slaw and scrap metal, all but one of the pull tabs had made it to my bucket on the way through the garage. Once separated and cleaned up a bit I had a Big pile of clad for the day. Dang nice haul for a few hours of fun and enjoyment.

Clad.webp

Yeah, a little over fourteen dollars... I think I covered my gas for the day, and several more days hunts in the future! <smile> Another nice addition to the Vacation Fund. Cool. Big Clad, Big Coins, a little silver... yeah it was a Very good day for me. I hope you all have such a day soon as well. As always...

you always make your day of detecting so delightful
and we need more of that in todays world. :coffee2:

Detecting is like fishing... and you know, that "Any day of fishing is better than a day at work." Detecting is dirt fishing! And I like to fish... so any chance I get to go detecting is certainly delightful in my book.
Isn't that the same for everyone here?

113 coins in a day.....I would call that a great day! I'm jealous, however, I'm still playing 'nurse Betty' to my wife with the knee replacement. I'm having withdrawal symptoms!!....need to hunt!

OUCH! My mom just went through that earlier this year, I feel for you wife. It's a long painful recovery, but do what the doctors and therapysts say to do, it works. Hope she is up and dancing around again soon, and I hope you get to get out and hunt soon too. As for my 113 coin day, well it's pretty good I'll admit, but I've had better days, as well as quite a few days with lower numbers. Of course that's only counting the coins... not all the other targets that get dug up as well, more pull tabs than I care to count. An average hunt might be closer to 200 or 300 targets if you count all the trash and tabs and whatzits. Talk about needing a knee replacement! Of course, with my mom having to go through it, it may be in the cards for me too someday. Just as her diabetes was passed along, and the asthma... and Dad's heart problems... If it's all in the genes I might be seeing a lot of hospitals and stuff... <shudder> I hope not, and I'm trying to live a healthier lifestyle to prevent that stuff.

Anyway, best wishes to you and your wife... and...

That is a huge day . I know the fall day at 70 no kids around Priceless ! was out there yesterday myself . Not close to your finds however I did manage a wheat penny .
I have noticed that when I start finding big clad ,(halfs & sacs ) I think it is because banks get over run with them and when they get big change order they sub the halfs . Any way I got to do a race track bleacher once and found 7 in one day . Weird . Nice day FRODOV . Rob :coffee2:

Yeah I do love finding the big coins... but I think the reason I find so many at this park is because the refferrees use them for the coin toss at the beginning of the games and for foul decisions or whatever they call that. Of course running up and downt he field officiating the game they tend to lose the change in their pockets, including the big coins. I know I've found quite a few of the official decision "Toss" coins as well as Kennedy halves and dollar coins. They are always a blast to find. I'm hoping to get back down to that park next week and try my luck again. I like detecting the sports fields in the parks around my area, be they for soccer, football, baseball or whatever. Yeah, you can find stuff under and around bleachers or just alongside the playing fields where the parents and other "watchers" sit and gather. Usually pocket spills in these areas too.

Again, a great story to make it feel like we are right there with you. ;D Congrats on the finds... My only half came just 2 weeks ago at a soccer complex. Maybe I should hit it a little more often, could be a pattern there. :laughing9:

Mow the lawn man! Grid search the playing field as well as the sidelines. I never would have thought that the players would lose so much change and stuff, but they do. For the longest time I searched only the side lines along the playing fields where the observers and parents would sit while they watched the games or practices. Then I noticed that sometimes the fields were repainted to different sizes for the smaller kids to play. It dawned on me then that the "sidelines" were not fixed... they changed with the changes in the field set ups. So to be thorough, you need to grid search the entire area. Sweep the entire length of the field then double back the other direction just one sweep or partial sweep over from the "lane" you just completed. It's ok, even recommended, to overlap a little on the "lanes". And be ready to kneel down... A LOT... as you are going to find target after target after target. Enjoy!

:notworthy: Wow, what a day. My best day so far is about 3.50 in clad and a mercury dime. Over 14.00 in one day, man that's great. never have found a half dollar yet, I've only been doing this for about 3 months. :icon_thumleft: congrats. AA

My local soccer complex will not allow MD'ing on the fields, nothing inside the lines! I have a permit to hunt the city parks, however, the manager over the parks (the one that issued the permit to me) found me digging in one of the fields, stopped me and told me "das ist verboten!" He was surprised that he had great difficulty in finding any spots that I had dug, however, that didnt change the rules.

I've been detecting now for a little over four years I guess, but I still consider myself something of a newby as well. As for not finding big coins yet or very many coins... it'll happen. You just have to ONE: learn your machine. I know that sounds pretty pat and "sage" advice, but there really is a learning curve to using most any machine. With a little time you will learn the quirks and idiosyncracies (spelling?) or personality of your particular detector. How a pull tab registers or "sounds" on you detector, or how a piece of foil or a quarter sounds differently. Like me, you may not even notice that you are learning it at first. <blushing> but you will. TWO: GO WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE (or were). I hunt mostly parks and playgrounds... mostly because I've not had time or in some cases, the nerve to ask for permission to hunt older residences in my town. I did try to get on the grounds of a VERY old hospital here in Lexington that has been in operation for over a hundred years. THe hospital is being replaced by a new facility on the other side of town, and the old grounds are being taken over by a Community College. Well, my first several attempts to gain permission have faltered due to liability issues and bureaucracy. I haven't given up hope completely yet though. Anyway.. If you go to where the people are or have been, parks, playgrounds, fairgrounds, local favorite picnic sites... you will find the coins too. But you have to think a little too. At a park or an athletic complex detect not only the sidelines where people have set up their camp chairs and coolers, but the pathways between there and the concession stands, bathrooms, and parking areas. I LOVE parking areas, grass or gravel, you will ALWAYS find coins there. Look for shade trees too, especially if they are in line of sight with the playing areas. Embankments or retaining walls or sloping hillsides that offer a view to the ball fields or playing areas... not everyone brings a camp chair with them after all.
Well there are a few ideas for you to work on. Trust me, if people have been there, then there are coins and other treasures there waiting to be found. You WILL find them if you look. And in the words of the many learned detector gods and godesses here on TreasureNet.com... "Dig EVERYTHING" At least while you are learning your machine. You will dig lots of trash and pull tabs, but that's ok, if you bag it and trash it, it won't be there the next time you detect that spot. Remember This... Unlike old houses and "historical" sights where people are finding the neat older coins (yes I'm jealous)... parks and playgrounds get "replenished" every year! Or at least as long as the parks are in use. So, Have fun.. and most importantly...
