Biggest, Oldest Silver French Coin, and what a surprise.

EDIT; Just figured out what appears to be damage on the obverse is not, turns out it is an overstrike of a previous (1720) type and you should be able to see it quite well in the zoomed pic.

EDIT added a dirty pic.
Here's a dirty pic., a frame taken from the video clip.
and the whole "find" story is on page 2 or 3.

Bet seeing that one come out of the dirt was nice! Awesome digs

Sure was, no doubt about it. (even if I didn't know exactly what it was for a couple of hours)

Thanks P, and everyone else.

This really is a high grade coin, and it just got a bit more interesting. Yes it is a 1/3 ecu as IP guessed in the first reply, and the right weight, but puzzeling me is it is a couple mm too big at 30mm.
I been looking at it for awhile now, and what I thought was damage on the obverse is what is left of the reverse of an older type coin. An overstrike. You should be able to see in this picture.

looks like a private counterstamp rather than an overstrike to me, but whichever it is that is an awesome find. congrats!

Definitely overstrike from the previous year, I even found reference to it happening, I'll see if I can find it again.
In the mean time here is a picture of the 1720 reverse so you can see. (this one has a different mint mark)

luv it !! What a great lookin' silver 20 sols  those coins circulated in the Original 13 American colonies but
no luck getting even close to one of those , esp. one that old . Some dates are very valuable , 1722 :icon_scratch: not sure .

Well Done , your getting your share .

Found it,

." The type was struck 1720-23 in large numbers while the adventurer John Law dominated the French government. Many were struck over petit Louis d'argent struck in 1720."

Taken from here.
