What a day! Earthworks was on fire -- dude was smokin. About a year ago when the leaves were down I saw this elevated 1700s or 1800s dirt road through the woods not far from my house and asked permission and got it, but we never made it over there because of other hot sites we were going after. Today we finally made it over there, not knowing what we would find. I start to detect the road and not having much luck then go off to one side near a stone wall. Earthworks sniffs out an area with an old stone culvert that looked to be a pond or lake at one time and he starts detecting around the edges. Suddenly I hear a loud "BERGIE!!" (I don't wear headphones, so I can hear it). I knew from Earthworks' voice this was not an Indian or something like that. I go running, jumping over tree limbs and arrive on the scene. The dude calmly flips a large cent in the air, which I snatch in mid flip and look to see it's in great shape -- 1849 clearly visible. We are off and running. A while later I get a text message from earthworks, says "Indian" -- ok, more of a good sign, and we are seeing old bottles and clam shells. A while later, I get an Indian of my own, then Earthworks gets two more. We both start finding old buttons. I see him over at the base of a hill and he's talking some junk about going to the top of the hill because it's a good spot and I don't see why it would be better than the old road, but old Earthworks has his thinking cap on. Back in the old days, before the trees, houses and everything else, that hill would give a great view of the Hudson River and would be a natural place for people to go. Not realizing this at the time, I head back toward the old road. A while later...my phone goes off...text message reads:
"1899 SILVER BARBER HALF DOLLAR" -- I know immediately it's the dude's first ever Barber Half -- cause for celebration. I text back: "F'ing A, U F'ing, F, that is find of the year" -- he calls me on the phone, "Get up here, more signals!" -- I go flying up the hill and he pulls that monster silver out of his pocket. What a sight. I did have to take him down a notch by reminding the dude that I have found four barber halves :-) and welcome to the club. Here's where it just keeps getting better. We are detecting the top of this hill full throttle right where he found it and his detector screams another silver...dig, dig, dig,,probe, probe....then we see it, the back of a barber quarter...niiiiiceee!!!! 1897!!! Wait, still some signal there...cool looking skeleton key, then a second one. A few steps away -- dude's detector whales again! This time 1955 Washington quarter (we were semi-bummed it wasn't another Barber, but we'll take it). Meanwhile, I'm finding stuff like memorial cents, junk and whatever else (aside from my one Indian and the buttons). Earthworks gets one more Indian, and then we call it a day. What a rush that was. Enjoy the photos by earthworks and more photos in second post below...
