BIG THERMOMETER

Any ideas what this thermometer was used for ? It has no makers mark .
It goes from 0 to 760 degrees Fahrenheit . The metal holder is brass

I know this isn't the one BUT it has the similar characteristics EBay: Closed Metal Case Total Imersion Pocket Thermometer 0 to 220 Degrees F...

Used in Chemistry lab situations I would guess. I don't think it has any one specific use in particular, other than the obvious. I have a few different ones that were in a lot of Pyrex labware, but they are in hard cardboard tubes, versus a brass case.
