Found along Sherman’s 1865 route (and thus the Confederate retreat route) in Eastern North Carolina. I think it’s a Bingham School button from Mebane, NC. I’ve seen some disagreement about whether the block letters are pre or post war. I’ve found other Confederate items in the same area (NC sunburst buttons, for example) so I think there’s a chance it’s the right period.

No back, so no backmark to check. Any info or opinions are welcome

I don't have any info on the button, but it's good to hear from a fellow Eastern NC. detector. Very nice find!

I have one of the CW buttons, they have script lettering on them. (I bought it.) Can you post a picture of the back?

No back on it - just this front (which obviously still has some mud.) A back would help.

update - heard from a guy I know who has found over 50 of these - he says postwar for the block letters. A little disappointing but that may be the verdict unless I can find one with a definitive backmark.

The one I have has the cw backmark.

DANG NEET FIND

Yes, it's still a very nice early button.

Nice button for sure.Congrats
