It’s been a while ya’ll, but just wanted to share this Lamar period pottery adornment I found. Nicest shard I have ever found. Glad I went to the site despite the wet ground. I also found some other shards, and my first piece of hard stone debitage. Thankful to have found this, and thanks for reading.

Nice effigy and shards, John. I wonder what bird that person was thinking about when they made that effigy. :looks like a rooster but they did not arrive until 1493 on Columbus second voyage. Interesting.

Very cool piece of folk art. Thanks for showing this

Thanks for the replies Ya'll, was a pleasure to find and the speculation around its crest is interesting.

obviously a clay pigeon.:laughing7:

I don’t know where it was found but this one came from Fort Walton Florida...Fort Walton and Safety Harbor are the same period wares..The period extended well into the mission era...

You found the best part of the vessel 👌

Is there a problem with rinsing it off better. Not complaining just curious in case i ver find any ?

I'm not up to snuff on my bird effigies so why a parakeet or raptor? None I know of have a comb like that.
I think it's based on the bald patch around the eyes and the curved beak. The rest is obviously highly stylized. It could represent the top knot style hairdo that some human effigies have.

A member here found an effigy pipe with a raptor with a head in its hands, it has a comb.

Thanks Joshua. I can see what you are talking about.

Very cool find! So beautiful! What is the meaning of a bird effigy anyways? Did Spanish use them?

Sea horse?

Why couldn't this be a representation of a turkey?
Seems like a turkey would have been an important part of their culture.

it's possible it's simply called a crested bird effigy as shown here without trying to id the specie
