Bison skulls - Some of our better specimens

Those poor buffalo, here for thousands of years, maybe longer. We show up and in no time they're gone! Whole NA cultures disappeared with them. Nice skulls, do you hand them up anywhere?

Those are awesome! One time my dad found one stuck in a gully, we came back a day later and there had been a gully washer of a storm in between him finding it and coming back the next day with a pick and shovel. It was gone, and we couldn't find it even down stream.

Thanks GaRebel. Most likely you guessed right and if so the answer would be no.
However I do have stands that I display them on when exhibiting at shows.

That's what I meant, didn't proof read! I saw a bunch of long horn skulls hung up on a barn once, looked pretty neat..

Often times at shows you will see bison skulls lying flat on the table but they look more impressive if standing at a more natural angle. The stands also save storage space for the larger, more complete bison skull specimens as seen in this image.

I have found several bison skulls, but still looking for the elusive Bison '''antiquitus''.





I found this one laying in the soil upside down.

Good Bison Bison finds old digger.

Here in the central Great Plains if you are finding numerous bison remains your chances of finding projectile points are greatly increased. If you are finding Bison Occidentalis or Bison Antiquus then you know you are hunting where paleo aged deposits have been exposed.

Here are three Bison Occidentalis skull caps with a smaller Bison Bison in front for comparison.

If anyone else wishes to share their bison finds please feel free.

My one set of horns, and I’ve got partial skull, I know the middle part is turned 90deg but looks better that way

Speaking of older bison species, this rib came from the same area and it’s much darker and slightly heavy I suspect it’s Pleistocene.

I have found half a skull and a nice vertebrae years apart. The only two bone pieces I’ve found that I am sure are from the Buffalo.

I guess this is developing into the show your bison skulls thread. I have one that I traded a laptop for. It was dug from a slough in S. Dakota in the 60's. The archy who dug it and traded it to me said it had been injured in a fight with another bison that punched a hole in it's skull that eventually killed it.





I have an alternate theory. The puncture wound is the perfect shape and size to have been caused by an iron arrowhead. It didn't initially kill the animal as there is an area of the skull surrounding the wound that shows signs of a massive infection that may have eventually killed it. I suppose a carbon date could determine if it's too old to have been hit by an iron arrowhead.

Very interesting bison skull and theories dirtscratcher.

Here is another bison skull a friend of mine found. It exhibits a large indentation just beneath the brain cavity that apparently healed over as no open cracks around the outer perimeter of the caved in area are evident. The shape and size of the wound reminds me of what you would see if the animal was hit with a sizable stone maul.
