It seems these guys are kinda new in the area and this is the 3rd one I've seen. Each time I've seen them they are along the creek and it appears they like to do their fishing in overgrown shaded areas or where the creek cuts a gorge below the surface of the creek away from areas where they can be out in the open. In doing a little fact checking on this interesting bird I read they are among the seven heron species observed to engage in bait fishing by luring or distracting fish by tossing edible or inedible buoyant objects into water within their striking range, a rare example of tool use among birds.

Great picture! We don't have that heron around here, but we do have a lot of the Great Blue Herons here. Thanks for sharing.

The first one i saw, I was thinking it was a juvenile blue haron. This bird is about half the size of a blue haron.
