black rock found on beach

Found this black rock..it is very lite not much weight to it....i thought it might be petrified wood..found on beach in NJ usa

Nope. Petrified wood is actually heavy like a stone. Actually that looks like a pumice stone to me and yes they usually are lighter in weight due to the many pockets of air holes inside.

Not petrified wood.

Maybe coal or asphalt.

asphalt dosent make sense too me ive seen tons of that this is shiney..like coal but i know coal..its heavier then this...

I guess you could hold a lighter to the thin edge of it and see if it smokes afterwards. If you recognize the smell of burning coal it should be easy to tell

i think it is coal burned it..it burned gave a scent like a blacksmith shop....the burned spot turned bluish...
