mother of pearl. Basically, its a chunk of a clam shell.

Ehhhhh I’m not so sure. It does look kind of like shell but I think the OP may be right. Those are pretty impressive blues. I think it may well be opal

It depends on the geology of where you live. If it's Manhattan, NY, forget about it. If you're in Australia, that's a different proposition.

Hard to tell but it seems to display the right fracture, a waxy lustre and a chalky rind, you should go back to the spot and look for more of the same material, maybe you've stumbled on a personal opal mine!

Appears to be Opal.

New River? ??? Mexico? Indiana? The New River that runs through Springfield?

Maybe a hint on the location?

Probably the New River in North Carolina or Virginia, although it flows through West Virginia as well. If North Carolina or Virginia, then I believe that the specimen may be Moonstone that formed in host rock that contained Copper and/or Chromium and possibly some other elements such as Vanadium. Outside of the Turquoise Blue colors, the specimen has all the appearances of Moonstone. Moonstone specimens have been found in North Carolina and Virginia sometimes associated with the same host rocks where Aquamarine and Emerald is found. I have even found quite a few specimens of Moonstone and Amazonite as well while prospecting for Aquamarine at the Ray Mica Mine in North Carolina.

Those are some great finds I wish I had one of these Great post

Welcome also from MI Tommy

New river is in WV

It must have turned out to be a shell...???

I don't know about that A2, you are killing me in terms of silver and gold finds. I would be happy with that. Silver and gold coins in metro Atlanta area are very rare. There is something in the Georgia red clay that turns silver and gold coins into pull tabs and screw tops after about one year.

Looks like opal to me , sure resembles the Lightning ridge( Australia) stuff from the pictures . I would keep the nicer pieces in water and leave a couple out exposed and see if they crack/ craze any further if they are stable that would be awesome , if not still cool to look at in water. Nice find hope you get more of it.
