Can we get some additional background? Where did you get it? What country are you in?

Too big and heavy to be a rattle in some sort of Santeria or Voodoo ceremony. Prob too heavy to be a float. Why make a pestle or pound stone out of clay when you can just use a rock?

Fertility rite?

Canopic jar? What is that substance on the inside?

When you say "bottle diving" do you mean literally, that it was found under water? What was it found with?

Seems African or West Indian to me, but I can't explain why.

That is a really awesome find, I'm quite green with envy that you had the opportunity to dive in the USVI! Can't wait to find out what it is!

Unfortunately, it appears the genie has escaped through the hole in the bottom of the bottle. Better luck next time!

In pic #3, it appears that there may have been an extension to the interior bottom (large end) of the piece. If this was the case, then I would say that it was some kind of top to a larger clay container for holding water, whale oil, etc... See my' poor sketch below using Paint.

It's and amphora! I wish it was complete, but either way I'm happy. Now comes the task of trying to date it and find its origins. Looks like I'll be diving there again this weekend......

Do you mean that it is a piece from an amphora and where did you get the information from? It is awfully small to be an amphora but clould be a piece for or from one!

Not a clue as to what this is. All I know is that it's clay and at one time was fully enclosed. Here's the photos.

Maybe it wasn't fully closed on the big end...and it had a small hole that held a wick and it was filled with oil.. The shape would make it easy to mount in a ship so it wasn't prone to tipping over.

Chian amphora (greek wine). Although the one pictured is WAY older than other finds on your site (1st C.). Perhaps they continued making them like this for a long time. I don't know. But the shape looks about right.
